Checkbox (Multi-Choice)

Use the checkbox or multi-select/multi-choice question type when you want to allow respondents to select more than one options from a set of possible responses.

Watch this video or keep reading for more information!

Build

To insert a checkboxes question, simply drag and drop the checkbox icon from the sidebar into the survey editor.

To add answer choices, click the “+” below the last answer choice. You can also copy and paste a list and populate answers automatically.

To delete an answer choice, hover to the left of the corresponding question number and click the red “x” that appears.

Note: this question type requires at least 2 answer options.

You can also change the order in which answer choices appear for each respondent clicking on the Randomize box. Even with randomization selected, you can still anchor specific answer choices in place. Simply activate the anchor icon adjacent to the desired answer option.

Exclusive N/A

By default a Checkbox question type will have the exclusive N/A option turned on. This means that if a respondent selects this option they won't be able to select any other option. A few other things to note:

  • The "None of the Above" text can be edited.
  • This option will always be anchored at the bottom.
  • Only 1 N/A option per question.

Min/Max Settings

The min required setting controls the minimum number of answers required to advance to the next question. Use this setting for questions when it's important to receive at least 2 or more answers to the question.

This GIF shows an example of a question that requires at least three answers.

The max allowed setting controls the maximum number of answers allowed before advancing to the next question. You can use this setting on its own or in combination with “min required" to specify an acceptable range of selected answer choices.

This GIF shows how respondents show an example of a minimum setting of 2 answers but a maximum of 5 answers.

This question type also allows an image grid - read that in our Radio Button article linked below.
